Myths about Drying with a Chamois
If you are an old-school car enthusiast, like me, then it is likely that you have been taught the use of a sheepskin drying towel. For those unfamiliar with the term, a "shammy" is characterized by two qualities that make it an excellent absorbent.
It is able to absorb water quickly because of its large surface area. The fabric and nap of the chamois are also important. Modern chamois are made primarily from sheepskin. There are some synthetic chamois. In either case, the material will absorb water. Second, chamois has the ability to release or 'wring' out water.
Chamois does not just spread water, but it also has a suction-like effect. When the cushion is removed, it grabs dirt or dust and etches it on the surface. This is the most common way to cause scratches on cars.(Car Wraps)
Why using a squeegee can be a bad idea
So-called "expert detailing" uses squeegees to dry cars. The same product is used to remove water standing on a window or glass. This product works great on glass but can scratch vehicles with coated or waxed surfaces.
Some car enthusiasts use different squeegees but they all carry the same risk of damage as synthetic chamois. The chamois produces suction which is what removes water. It will spread any damaging particles on the surface. A microfiber cloth is designed to glide over the liquid's surface and pick up the particles. You have not removed all dirt or debris from your clothing during the wash process. It's not true that you have removed all dirt and debris from your clothes during the washing process.
Super Plush High-GSM Drying Towel
In an earlier post and video we explained how microfiber towel are made. In the image below, you can see how the design of the microfiber towels helps them to collect debris rather than spreading it across the surface.
The majority of microfiber towels are designed for detailing, like removing liquid wax or spray coats. The drying towel has a different design. Drying towels usually have a higher GSM (grams per square meter). The towels are heavier and therefore can hold more liquid. A microfiber cloth that has a GSM greater than 800 is recommended because water is "heavy".
You can use a microfiber waffle weave towels. The super-plush terry towels will dry out your car much better than chamois. Never clean your car with paper towels.
What about blowing the air off of the surface?
Blowing air off is another safe way to dry your car. One thing to remember. You should consider the blow-drying method. Some detailing shops use air compressors to blow out small crevices such as window seals and jams.
The oil from the air compressor can blow onto the surface of your vehicle. Even shops with filters may still have tiny particles in the air lines. These can be spread on the newly cleaned surface.Diamond Car Wraps
If you want to dry your clothes using air, use an electric leaf blower. You can use a microfiber cloth to dry your clothes after using the leaf blower.
